July 2021 Water Trial

PNWPWDC Deep Lake water trial will be held July 17-18, 2021 at Nolte State Park, Enumclaw, WA. Suzanne Malick is judge.

This two-day water trial will be held in accordance with the provisions of the current Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA) water trial manual and updates, copies of which may be downloaded at no charge from the PWDCA website.

Join us at Deep Lake for our first water trial of the 2021 season! After missing both trials last year due to covid restrictions, we know everyone is excited to get back in the water. This year there will be a Friday afternoon July 16 practice session available to volunteers who work at the trial. This is followed by two days of water trials on Saturday and Sunday July 17-18 with our PNW judge Suzanne Malick.

The very first PNWPWDC water trial was held in 1991, so 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of our club trials! To commemorate this anniversary we will have a special T-shirt available for sale at both water trials. All proceeds support the PNWPWDC water program. Purchase and pick up at the trial, or shipping is available for extra cost. We’ll have Ship’s Locker merchandise available to support the club as well.

Trial Volunteer and Practice Session

Water Work is labor intensive and we need plenty of volunteers for the trial, including set-up on Friday morning and tear-down on Sunday afternoon. You do not need to be entered in the trial in order to volunteer. No experience is necessary, and the schedule will be set to avoid any conflicts with your entries. Please complete the volunteer form and submit with your trial entries.

Volunteers who work at the trials are also able to sign up for the Practice Session on Friday, July 16, 2021. The Practice will be held Friday afternoon following site setup Friday morning. There are a limited number of 15 minute time slots available, cost is $10 per 15 minute session. Due to high demand, only one practice session per dog, two dogs per handler. Entry in the practice gives you access to the site and boats– you must arrange for your own stewards. Plan enough time to help others, and they will help you. More information on the Practice Session is available in the Premium List.

Practice Session lottery deadline is Friday June 11. All entries received by July 11 will be treated equally. If entry limit is exceeded, there will be a random drawing for slots on June 12. Practice entry closing is June 25, 2021.

Online volunteer/ practice sign-up and payment is preferred. You may also complete the pdf volunteer/practice sign-up and mail in.

If you want to camp for the Deep Lake trial, you should make reservations ASAP. There is no camping at Nolte State Park.

Kanaskat-Palmer state park is nice but fills very rapidly. https://parks.state.wa.us/527/Kanaskat-Palmer  Reservations should be available now. https://parks.state.wa.us/223/Reservations

Another option is the RV park at the Enumclaw Expo center. For info go to http://www.enumclawexpocenter.com/ and click on the RV park tab. Facilities are not luxe, but it’s right at the Expo center with easy access to town and the trial site. Make reservations at https://www.roverpass.com/c/enumclaw-expo-center-rv-campground-enumclaw-wa/booking/

Lodging options for Deep Lake Trial

Local accommodations in Enumclaw are limited, and always fill up during summer weekends, so if you even think you want a hotel room be sure to book right away.

Our usual hotel option in Enumclaw is the Rodeway Inn, 1334 Roosevelt Ave E, next to the Expo center. Phone is 360-825-1626. We have blocked 5 rooms for Friday July 16th and Saturday July 17th that are available only until July 1. All rooms are 2 queen beds and NO smoking.

Rate is $135 + tax per night, with a $5 per dog per night. PLEASE bring sheets/blankets to cover beds and couch. That’s why we got $5 fee rather than $10 per night.

Call hotel to reserve one of the 5 rooms. Talk to Robert (if you can). 360-825-1626, then “0”. Reservation is under PNW — short for PNWPWDC. Tell them you want to book a room under that reservation.

Robert said that they do keep track of people and groups that leave the rooms a mess after having lots of dogs in them and will not take a reservation for them again. So, as we always have been, please be a good guest and keep the rooms and grounds clean. Thank goodness for non-shedding dogs!

The other hotel option in Enumclaw is Guest House, 1000 Griffen Ave, Enumclaw. Phone is 360-825-4490. There are a few rooms left for that weekend, so if you prefer that option call ASAP.

Additional information and trial details will be posted as available.
