Annual Meeting and Holiday Party
Celebrate the season at the club’s Holiday Party and Annual Meeting. The Holiday Party is a great place to meet old friends and make new friends, both human and canine. Members and non-members are welcome to attend.

Activities

  • Holiday Potluck starting at 12:30 PM
  • Annual Meeting that includes the election of officers by Regular members present.
  • Holiday Themed photo booth
  • Year-end celebration and acknowledgement of club members and their dogs.
  • K9 Gift Exchange – each guest who wishes to participate with their Portuguese Water Dog should bring a gift. The gift is for the dogs! ($10 max)
  • Trick Dog Evaluations by Kelly Liedtke

Holiday Potluck Lunch

  • If your Last Name begins with A to I: bring a salad, appetizers or bread to share
  • If your Last Name begins with J to S: bring entrees, sides, or vegetables to share
  • If your Last Name begins with T to Z: bring a dessert to share

We’d like to recognize PNWPWDC members’ achievements with their PWD(s) at the Holiday Party. Three important questions:

Trick Dog Evaluations

Bring your Portuguese Water Dog to participate not only in the K9 gift exchange, but to participate in Trick Dog evaluation and earn a title! Trick Dog evaluations will be done by Kelly Liedtke. You will need to bring your own props for the Trick Dog evaluations. Cost: $20.00 per dog Limit: 2 dogs per household Show off your PWD’s tricks and earn a Trick Dog title! There are five AKC Trick Titles you and your PWD can earn. For those just starting out, for the AKC Novice Trick Dog title, your dog performs 10 skills from the Novice list. If your dog has a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificate or title on record at AKC, it can do 5 Novice tricks (CGC + 5) to earn the Novice title. Dogs that have completed the Novice title may also test for advanced titles. See more title information on the AKC site. To participate in the Tricks Title evaluation and receive your title:
  1. Complete the event registration (see button below)
  2. Print and complete the AKC Trick Dog Title Application, and the Tricks Checklist for your testing level.
  3. Bring your AKC Title Application and Tricks Check List with you to the Holiday Party, along with check or cash for $20 per dog to pay the evaluator.
  4. If your dog successfully completes the evaluation, you will then submit the your paperwork and a $25 application fee to AKC to record and issue the title. Information on this process is detailed on your AKC Trick Dog Title Application.

When turning onto the gravel lane from 222nd Street SE, drive SLOWLY all the way down the lane until you come to the end; the driveway forks. August 2019 Water Trial

Entries are closed. The trial is completely full with a wait list.

Join us this summer for the 20th anniversary of the PNWPWDC Flowing Lake water trial! The trial will be held at Flowing Lake Park, Snohomish, WA on August 24-25, 2019, and is open to all levels from Junior through Master. Alan Reisdorf from Athens, GA is our water trial judge.

This two-day water trial will be held in accordance with the provisions of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA) water trial manual and updates, copies of which may be downloaded at no charge from the PWDCA website.

Flowing Lake County Park is located at 17900 48th St SE, Snohomish WA. Parking is $10 per day, available at the gate with cash or credit card.

Trial Schedule for Saturday and Sunday

The order of the trialing classes are as follows: Junior to Master on Saturday, August 24, and Master to Junior on Sunday, August 25.

7:00 AM: Park gates open
7:15 AM: Check-in and equipment check
7:30 AM: Briefing starts for the first class
8:00 AM: Trial starts with the first class

Even if you don’t have a dog trialing in water work, feel free come out to watch the PWDs in action at Flowing Lake Park.

Online Entry Instructions

1. Download and read the 2019 August Trial Premium. The premium has important information about the water trial, the Friday Match, parking fees, and more.

2. The preferred way to enter the water trial or sign-up to volunteer and register for the practice session is online. You may pay by MasterCard or Visa or with your PayPal account. Please note the following:

a. Complete one online entry form per dog. If you are using a substitute steward for Courier or Master and they are not entered in the trial, they must complete the online substitute steward participation agreement.

b. After you have completed an online entry form, you will be sent to the Volunteer / Match Sign-up form where you also may register for the Friday Match and complete your volunteer form. Please note that the match is currently full and entries will be placed on the waitlist. We hope that you will volunteer even if you do not enter the match–we need support from the water trial community to make our trials happen! Many thanks!

c. You will receive system generated emails with the confirmation that both your Entry and Volunteer / Match sign-up forms have been received.

****UPDATE– the match is currently full and new entries will be placed on the waitlist. If you enter for the waitlist and do not get in to the match, your entry fee will be refunded. We hope that you will complete the volunteer form even if you do not enter the match. The water trials cannot happen without support form the participating water community and we need you time and expertise to make things run! Thank you!

Volunteers who work at the trials are also able to sign-up for the Match on Friday, August 23, 2019. You don’t have to be entered in the trials to sign-up for the Match–you just have to volunteer.

For those not entering the water trial, you can still help (and we’ll love you for it!)  Water trials can’t happen without dedicated volunteers. No experience is necessary for many of the stewarding positions at the water trial. Also, it’s a great way to see the trial up close. We are so appreciative of those who volunteer to work to make the trials possible–it simply can’t happen without your help.

Water Training Practice Sessions

Come join us for four days of water training opportunities on Wye Lake in Port Orchard WA. Sandy Overton and Julie Hicks have lake front property equipped with markers and boats and will host these training days. Even if you’re not yet ready to train with your dog, you may attend to watch, learn, and help out.

**Practice Update: The Aug 3/4 session is full.

There are two more days of practice scheduled —  August 3/4, 2019. Each day will be a full day of training time to be shared with other participants. Plan to spend the day from 10 AM to 4 PM to train your dogs, and to help train and row for others. Come to one or both weekend days as desired. Space is limited and advance signup is required.

Lunch will be provided (potluck contributions invited). Limited overnight accommodations available on a first-come basis (beds and RV spots). If you are interested in overnight accommodation, please indicate on the entry form and you will be contacted with details.

Cost is $10 per dog per day. Submit the entry form and event waiver via email to Julie Hicks at julie.hicks1@icloud.com. Contact Julie if you need info to send entry by US mail. Entry must be received one week before the practice day to allow for scheduling.

July 2019 Water Trial

A two-day water trial will be held in accordance with the provisions of the current Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA) water trial manual and updates, copies of which may be downloaded at no charge from the PWDCA website.

Join us at Deep Lake for our first water trial of the 2019 season! This year there will be a Friday afternoon July 19 practice match available to volunteers who work at the trial. This is followed by two days of water trials on Saturday and Sunday July 20-21 with our local judge Sarah Kahn.  We’ll also hold our Third Annual Senior Challenge and a Ducky Derby benefit on Sunday as well! Join us for the weekend at lovely Nolte State Park just north of Enumclaw WA.

Trial Entry Information

Download and read the trial Premium List, available below. This contains all the information you need to know about the trial, as well as volunteering and the Friday volunteer match.

Trial entry dates to remember:

Lottery Date: Lottery deadline is Friday June 14, 2019. All Regular entries received by the lottery deadline will be treated equally. If entry limit is exceeded by June 14, a random drawing will be held June 15, 2019. Remaining entries, if any, will be drawn for wait-list position.
Closing Date: Trial closing date is Friday June 28, 2019. All entries received after June 14 up to closing date will be accepted on a first-come basis as space is available.

Entry fee is $45 per class.

Day-of-trial entries may be accepted if time permits, with an additional $10 entry fee. Contact Amanda Ford to check on availability in advance.

Trial Volunteer and Match Signup

Water Work is labor intensive and we need plenty of volunteers for the trial, including set-up on Friday morning and tear-down on Sunday afternoon. You do not need to be entered in the trial in order to volunteer. No experience is necessary, and the schedule will be set to avoid any conflicts with your entries. Please complete the volunteer form and submit with your trial entries.

MATCH UPDATE: The practice match is full, with a wait list. If you want to be added to the wait list, complete the match and volunteer form below, but don’t submit your payment. I will contact you if space becomes available.

Volunteers who work at the trials are also able to sign up for the Practice Match on Friday, July 19, 2019. The Practice Match will be held Friday afternoon following site setup Friday morning. There are a limited number of 15 minute practice times available, cost is $10 per 15 minute session. This gives you access to the site and boats– you must arrange for your own stewards. Plan enough time to help others, and they will help you. You don’t have to be entered in the trials to sign up for the Match–you just have to volunteer. Match closing date is June 28, 2019.

Senior Challenge

We are pleased to hold our Third Annual Senior Challenge on Sunday July 21! The purpose of this non-regular water event is to afford our senior dogs an opportunity to participate with their handler in a water activity which contributes to their continued love of the sport. Dogs must be at least 10 years old and handlers will select any three water exercises they choose for their senior to perform. This is usually held at lunch time on Sunday. Entry fee is $15 and is limited to 5 dogs due to time constraints. Each dog will receive a special (and highly coveted!) participation award at the Sunday Water Trial Awards.Closing date is June 21, 2019. Please print and mail the entry form along with your payment to Sandy Overton, and contact her with questions.

2019 Introduction to Tracking

Learn how to get started in tracking — another way to enjoy the outdoors with your dog! Topics include: equipment, planning, resources, starting a new puppy, and introducing a dog to the sport. There will be demonstrations and the opportunity to introduce your dog to tracking.

PWDs have priority but all breeds and mixed breeds welcome. Limited working and audit spots. Light refreshments and door prizes will be offered!

FUND RAISER AND KICK OFF PARTY FOR THE 2019 PNWPWDC REGIONAL SPECIALTY “Celebrating Our Talents”

Select one or both: Morning grooming session appropriate for beginners basic, and trained groomers wanting to achieve the correct PWD look. Afternoon handling “games” to improve drive, free stacks, and owner/handler tips for the ring.

Morning Grooming Session

  • Time: 9:30 am to 11:30 am

The first portion of the session is basic …no experience necessary. We will discuss equipment, bathing, teeth, and toenails. During the BASIC portion, experienced groomers are invited to start grooming their dogs while listening.

Next, we will move to PWD specific grooming with your dog on the table. At this time trainers will move around the room and provide 1:1 training. We will DEEP DIVE into correct head shaping, ears, the PWD tail, and techniques. This portion is for beginner to grooming pro for that exact PWD look.

What to bring: clean dog, chair (some available), lots of treats, grooming table if you have, grooming equipment, and positive attitude.


Lunch Break and Supervised Doggy Field Romp

  • Time: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm

Afternoon Handling Session

Time: 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm

Focus is on training “games” you play with your dog to get them ready to shine in the ring, drive when you ask, free stack, etc. Portions will be divided to give beginners appropriate level easier tasks, while experienced handlers will be given challenges.  Dogs will be allowed several breaks, so this class is appropriate for young pups as well as older dogs. Handlers may bring more than one dog to assure that no dog is overworked. No pre-training required.

What to bring: crate, treats, show lead, front attached food pouch if you have (a few loaners will be available), open mind and a dog of any age or emotional disposition.


Cost

  • Member: $30 per session or $55 for both
  • Non-member:  $35 per session or $65 for both

Class working spots limited to 10.  Auditing unlimited $10 per session.
